Description Front cover; image and text. The front cover image shows the seven members of Split Enz in the foreground. They wear coloured suits and ties, and white shirts. Approximately half way up the cover is a horizon line with sky above. In the left of the sky there is a sunset or sunrise. To the right there is a cloud formation that becomes a landscape. Across the top of the sky there are cracks painted tromp l'oeil style. Behind the group, in the middle distance stand three men. The man far right is wearing a suit and tie. Next to him is a man in shorts and short sleeved shirt wearing a baseball cap. The man on the left of the picture is wearing a bathing suit standing next to an umbrella. The dominant colour of the sky is ultramarine. The landscape below the horizon is dark brown. The colour of the suits the group are wearing are deep blue, orange, yellow, pink, black. The group name 'Split Enz' is at the top left corner of the sleeve, in a yellow uppercase approx 25 point, decorative typeface with a 1920's-1930's style. The strokes of the individual letters are bifurcated. Below this is the title of the record 'Mental Notes'. It uses the same typeface, uppercase, approx 18 point. [CM]
Description Back cover; image and text. The back cover image forms a whole with the front cover image so that when the gatefold is opened it becomes a landscape image 24 inches across and 12 inches deep. A baby emerges from the lower foreground of the picture. Directly behind are two doorways, the tops of which merge into sky in a surrealistic fashion. Through the doorway or entrance on the left can be seen a chair. Through the entrance on the right can be seen two figures sitting next to a window. To the right of this is a seated figure, male, with arms folded. Behind him is an interior space, with one wall consisting of shelves. Directly behind his left shoulder is an arched doorway lit in red, in which stands a woman dressed in dark clothes. To the right of her is the torso of an elderly man dressed in a tuxedo. The top of the picture consists of cloud formation and at the right edge which meets the far left edge of the front cover, there is mountain scenery. The back cover text consists of title, artist and track listing running down the left side of the cover. Beneath each song title is writers credits in brackets. The type face is the same as that on front cover. The text is justified left, ranged right, and is yellow. [CM]
Description Gatefold; image and text. The inside cover is black and white. At the far left running down is a column of text, white reversed out of a black background. At the top of the column is 'SPLIT ENZ'. Directly below is 'MENTAL NOTES' and below this track listing and credits as on the back cover. Type is the same as front and back. Beneath the track listing is label copy, acknowledgements and publishing and copyright information. All text is justified left, ranged right. Across the gatefold inside cover is a row of photographs of the group. From left to right these are named as follows; Timothy Finn, Phil Judd, Jonathan Micheal Chunn, Wally Wilkinson, Noel Crombie, Eddie Rayner, Emlyn Crowther. Each name is set in the typeface found on cover and back but is arranged on curved baselines for a curly effect. Each name appears directly below the corresponding band member. The photographs are shot in dramatic side lighting that reveals aspects of the face but leaves other parts in shadow. Photographer is not credited. [CM]
