This image was used in an article by Chris Mousdale entitled "digging for gold", about record cover design as a window on New Zealand culture.
Relation Rugby Racing and Beer, by Rod Derritt
This record also makes ironic reference to New Zealand beer drinking culture.
Description Front cover; image and text. The front cover is a cartoon rendered in flat red, black, yellow and blue with black line drawing. A black car is driving out of the surf on to a beach, sending two red fish flying. In the foreground of the image, sitting in the yellow sand are a lawn bowls ball, a beer bottle, and a paua shell. In the background are two islands each with a straggly tree. The car number plate is licensed to Hula County and the word Eel is on the side of the car. The typefaces are all hand generated in a similar cartoon style, as is the flaming number 7 in the lower right corner. The cover image is bordered by a thin red frame. [KY]
Description Back cover; image and text. The back cover is also in a cartoon style with small images of an eel-man, a slug-man, a rocket blasting off, flags and a cowboy with a speech bubble proclaiming " It's not all beer and skittles shaping the culture of New Zealand". These images and the text are all rendered in black. The text is hand written - originally with a marker pen, and consists of song titles, musicians and instruments and other credits. The back cover is bordered by a red frame which is bisected by a white line which at the center top and bottom becomes zig zags. [KY]
