This image was used in an article by Chris Mousdale entitled "digging for gold", about record cover design as a window on New Zealand culture.
Description Front cover; image and text. The front cover depicts an idealised photographic image of a Maori woman, dressed in the traditional costume of flax skirt, woven bodice, and woven flax headband. She sits in a bush setting on a stream bank and is bathing her feet in the water. On the top right corner of the cover, printed in white, is the corporate logo of the Viking Record company. The cover is four colour with white and yellow lettering. The words "Maori Songs of Enchantment" are printed across the center of the cover, aligned left. The word Maori is in a plain white sans serif font, all upper case. The record title is in a yellow cursive, serif font. [DM]
Description Back cover; image and text. The back cover is typical of its era. Printed in black only, it consists of a mixture of serif (Times Roman) and sans serif (Helvetica) fonts. There is an interesting use of clip art borders - one with an interlocking Maori motif used to highlight the words of a poem dedicated to the poi performers at St Joseph's Maori College. The lower half of the cover contains a Viking Records promotion - "Catalogue of Maori Music of New Zealand". This promotion depicts nine record covers with titles such as; "Tokomaru Bay Songs", "On the Marae", "Hakas in Hi-Fi". Each cover is accompanied by a explanatory text. Below this is the Viking Records logo and information about copyright. [DM KY]
