This is an annual award since 1945 for the most distinguished contribution to literature for children. The story was adapted by Reed for this recording.
Description Front cover; image and text. The front cover is dominated by the image. The image, which has been painted in tones of pink and blue, is of a woman (in silhouette) walking on the shores of a lake. It is night. She has long hair and her right hand is raised as though waving. On the shore, to the right of the woman, are two Waka or canoes. The moon is bright, it is reflected the water and off the woman's hair. The lake continues until it meets the horizon, in the distance, hills can be seen at either side. On the left side of the cover are some trees, the branches of which create a frame around the left side of the lake. In the top left corner is a black and white portrait photograph of Inia Te Waiata. The words 'The Maori Flute' are in yellow and are placed in the top right corner. The top of the photograph and the top of the text are aligned. Below 'The Maori Flute' are the words 'The Love Legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai' in white. In the bottom left corner of the cover are the words 'Inia Te Waiata' (in yellow) and 'Singer and Storyteller' (in white). Underneath this is the Kiwi Records logo. [AAF]
Description Back cover; text only. The back cover consists of black text on a white background. In the top left corner is the record label number. In the top left corner are the words; 'A New Zealand Record from Kiwi'. Below this, justified centre, is the record title. Underneath this are the song titles. They have been divided into side one and side two by a thin horizontal line. To the left of the titles is an upside down price sticker for $0.50. Underneath this are two columns of body text which are centre justified. They give details of the story, songs and chants that are sung and told on the record, the career of Inia Te Waiata, and also information about the recording of the record. The story details and the rest of the information are separated by a horizontal line of asterisks. Underneath the right column are details of the cover designer and the record producer. Below this are publishing details and the Kiwi Records logo. To the left of this, in a rectangular box is a recommendation of another Maori music LP. [AAF]
